Tashena's Bridal Shower

Yesterday afternoon my sister Marilyn and I hosted a bridal shower for our niece Tashena.  The theme was Around the Clock and every guest was assigned a specific time of day in order to bring a gift that could be used at that time.  The invitations featured gold and silver clocks and so our decorations were gold and silver and we has cute clocks as cupcake toppers.  This theme was really fun because the gifts were so unique, such as the ingredients to make brunch, cooking items (a cock pot, an instant pot, and a wok) to make dinner, games to play in the afternoon, etc.  We served chicken salad sandwiches on croissants, fruit cups, punch, and chocolate cupcakes.  We only played one game (it is called bride babble), but it got everyone laughing out loud, and then Tashena opened her presents.  It was really great to see so many of Tashena's family members and friends come and support her!  Marilyn and I weren't sure if we could pull this off (huge thanks to Trent, Kristine, and Sean, especially during the balloon arch incident) but Tashena was happy and everyone seemed to have a good time so we are calling it a success!
Next up is the wedding in Washington state in May.

Gingerbread Houses 2022

Yesterday afternoon Sean, Tashena, Marilyn, and I made gingerbread houses which is a tradition we have had ever since Tashena joined our family and, as always, it was a lot of fun!  This year I got kits for these elaborate gingerbread manor houses because I thought they looked so cool but they ended up taking a long time to decorate!  None of us even bothered to decorate the backs of our houses (Sean didn't even decorate the sides) because they were so big.  They came with lots of candy (I still bought more) and royal icing in bags with piping tips.  It turns out that I am not very good at piping (I even had a major incident in which I got icing everywhere and I had to have Sean get it all back in the bag) but I think it would be fun to learn how to do it better.
I always have to get the traditional picture of Sean eating the icing!

Carrie Underwood at the Vivint Arena

I like Carrie Underwood but my niece Tashena is a huge fan!  I wasn't really planning on seeing her on her latest tour until Tashena mentioned that she wanted to go.  Since we had so much fun the last time we saw her, I decided to get tickets and I am really glad that I did!  The show last night was amazing and I loved seeing Tashena sing along to all of her hits!  She played quite a few songs from her latest album Denim & Rhinestones, including the title track, "Burn," Crazy Angels," "Garden," "Ghost Story," "Hate My Heart," "Poor Everybody Else," and "She Don't Know."  I wasn't very familiar with these songs but it didn't matter because Underwood has such a big voice and her performance was spectacular with multiple costume changes (with lots of the requisite rhinestones), pyrotechnics, platforms that emerged from below the stage, a floating sphere that transported her across the arena, and even a drum solo.  She had a long diamond-shaped stage and a smaller stage at the end of the arena which allowed her to interact with lots of the fans and she was so engaging and fun to watch.  However, it was when she sang the hits that the audience, especially Tashena, really got loud.  She started the evening with "Good Girl" and continued with "Church Bells," a rousing rendition of "Undo It" with lots of audience participation, "Cowboy Cassanova," "Wasted" (which was Tashena's favorite of the evening), a powerful rendition of "Blown Away," "Cry Pretty," "Two Black Cadillacs," "Flat on the Floor," and "Something in the Water."  I really love the song "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and her performance of it gave me goosebumps because she included "How Great Thou Art" at the end of it and she just about blew the roof off the Vivint Arena!  She also performed my very favorite of all her songs, which is "Last Name," and I sang every word at the top of my lungs!  For the encore, she sang a cover of "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses (which was another highlight for me) and then she got the entire arena singing with "Before He Cheats."  I had so much fun at this concert and I am so glad that Tashena suggested it (and I'm glad that she still likes hanging out with her aunt).  I think we should see Carrie Underwood together every time she comes to town!

Note:  The opening act was Jimmie Allen.  I wasn't familiar with any of his songs (I'm not a big fan of country music as a genre) but I really liked his voice and he was very entertaining!

Happy Birthday Tashena

Last night we celebrated Tashena's birthday early (it is actually at the end of the week) by going to dinner (Chuck-A-Rama), having cake (the traditional ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins), opening presents, and playing Shanghai Rummy!
I can't believe that she will be 22!

Pumpkin Carving 2022

Yesterday my family got together for our annual pumpkin carving party and we had so much fun.  We have been doing this with Sean and Tashena since they were really little and every year I wonder if it will be the last time because they will have outgrown it but Sean called me specifically to remind me to buy pumpkins!
I really love this tradition and I think our pumpkins turned out really cool this year!

Gingerbread Houses 2021

One of my family's favorite Christmas traditions is making gingerbread houses and, since we all needed a bit of Christmas cheer yesterday, we had our annual party and then played Shanghai rummy.
We had a lot of fun and, as always, we ate as much candy as we used on our houses!

I think they turned out pretty good this year!
After we made our gingerbread houses, Kristine and Trent joined us for Shanghai rummy.  It honestly felt good to relax a little bit after such a difficult month.  Trent won but the rest of us declared a rematch tonight!

Christmas 2020

I was given very strict instructions by Sean to be at my parents' house by 8:00 yesterday morning to start opening presents and I made with a few minutes to spare!  He was a bit excited!  We always take turns opening presents one at a time, starting with the youngest (Sean) to the oldest (my Mom), so it takes a couple of hours but it is so much fun.  It is also tradition to have cinnamon rolls and orange juice while we open.
Sean got a bunch of new games and, after we opened presents, we didn't see him again for the rest of the day because he was downloading and playing them.  Tashena's big present was an Apple watch and now I think I need one!  I got a new rolling duffel bag, a puffer jacket that folds into a small bag, a Hydro Flask, some winter boots, and some more DVDs for my Alfred Hitchcock collection.  If I am actually able to go to Iceland next year I am all set!  My Dad gave everyone $50 which is a tradition we have had since my sisters and I were really young (Sean already bought another game online).  In the afternoon we had a wonderful Christmas dinner with turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, pomegranate salad, rolls, and vegetables with dip.  We took a break and then had another game of Shanghai rummy.  I didn't come in last place this time but it still wasn't pretty!  It was a really nice Christmas!
