Mammoth vs. Avalanche

When SLC got an NHL team I was so excited because it meant that I could see my favorite team, the Colorado Avalanche, without having to travel to Denver.  I first saw them play the Mammoth during a preseason game two years ago and, even though I wanted the Avs to win at the beginning of the game, I was a Mammoth fan by the end of it!  I still love the Avs and I root for both teams but, when they play each other, I want the Mammoth to win.  Yesterday, both teams played a preseason game at the newly renovated Delta Center (my seat was in the new north end of the arena and the sightlines are much improved) and I had so much fun because Utah won and it has been a long time since I've seen that happen in person!  I really liked their improved forecheck because Utah was a lot more physical near the net and this aggressive style of play led to both of their goals, one from Jack McBain (with an assist from my favorite player Dylan Guenther) and one on the powerplay from Logan Cooley in the first period.  I was also really impressed with Karel Vejmelka in net because he stopped 25 shots for the shutout.  Both teams were a bit sloppy because there were a lot of penalties (Colorado went eight for nine on the penalty kill and Utah killed all four of their penalties) but I think Utah will only improve as the new forwards Anders Lee and Vincent Trocheck (who I think are great additions to the team) develop more chemistry with their lines. As with all of the other Mammoth games I've seen, the atmosphere was absolutely insane (even for a preseason game) and I loved being a part of it!  The Mammoth got the 2-0 win to finish the preseason 2-1-1 (which is not too bad).  I can't wait for the 2026-2027 season to begin!

Note:  This game made me miss my dad because I kept trying to decide which team he would have rooted for if he had been there with me.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Part Two!

Even though I recently crossed seeing an NHL playoff game off my bucket list, a small part of me was sad that I didn't see the Colorado Avalanche compete for Lord Stanley's Cup.  I have been a fan since the Quebec Nordiques relocated to Denver in 1995 and I have so many memories of watching them in the postseason with my dad.  When both the Avalanche and the Golden Knights advanced to the second round, I realized that they might possibly play each other in the Western Conference Final and I got the crazy idea that I could see a game in Las Vegas (it is faster and easier to drive there than to Denver).  I actually started looking at tickets immediately after Vegas eliminated Anaheim and, when I found one for Game 3 that was only slightly more than the dollar limit I set for myself, I bought it in a fit of madness!  The Avalanche were down 0-2 in the series so this game was huge for them and I was both excited and anxious.  I was also a little bit intimidated to walk into T-Mobile Arena wearing the opposing team's jersey but the Vegas fans I interacted with were very friendly (the fans at the Air Canada Centre, as it was called then, were more hostile when I saw the Avs play the Leafs in Toronto) and there were a lot of other Avalanche fans at the game, especially in my section.  The first period was so much fun because the Avs came out really fired up (like the team I watched all season rather than the team I watched in the first two games of this series) and, when Gabriel Landeskog, Nazem Kadri, and Jack Drury scored really pretty goals, all of the Colorado fans around me went crazy and we high-fived each other!  I started feeling really optimistic about their chances to win this game because Vegas couldn't seem to get anything going and their one goal was waved off.  However, all of the momentum shifted from Colorado to Vegas in the second period.  Mark Stone scored a power play goal for the Knights 19 seconds in and the Avalanche completely imploded from that moment on.  William Karlsson and Keegan Kolesar scored to even it up 3-3 to end the disastrous second period.  During the second intermission I tried to resign myself to the fact that the Avalanche were going to lose the game because Nathan MacKinnon injured his knee attempting to block a shot in the last few minutes of the period but I still had a sliver of hope because I have seen them rally many times.  That hope was dashed when Tomas Hertl scored the go-ahead goal at 8:21 and Brett Howden scored an empty-netter in the last minute of the game.  I was so disheartened by the fact that the Avs blew a 3 goal lead to lose 5-3 when they have been the team to beat since the start of the playoffs.  I have never seen a team melt down so spectacularly!  It is highly unlikely that the Avs can come back from an 0-3 deficit to win the series so my only hope is that one of the teams in the east can take down the Golden Knights (they have now become my most hated team).  Even though this game was disappointing (the drive home was a long one), I am still really glad that I took this road trip because it is my goal to be more spontaneous this year.

Note:  I have now seen two Stanley Cup playoff games and, in both of them, my team was defeated by Vegas.  Grrr!

Utah Hockey Club vs. Colorado Avalanche

I still cannot believe that Utah now has an NHL team!  I was beyond excited to see a preseason game between the Utah Hockey Club and my favorite team yesterday.  I usually have to drive eight hours to see the Colorado Avalanche in action but yesterday it only took about 20 minutes to get to the Maverick Center (it will be even closer when Utah plays in the Delta Center).  I went to the game with my sister Kristine, who has already become a rabid Utah fan, and it was so much fun even though we were cheering for different teams!  There were not a lot of goals scored but the game was still really exciting because of the goaltending by Connor Ingram, especially during the three Utah penalties in the third period because Colorado really put the pressure on.  Utah eventually got the 2-1 win but, even though I was sad to see the Avalanche lose (the preseason has been a disaster for them), I have to admit that I enjoyed seeing the home team for the first time (I never really followed them when they were the Arizona Coyotes).  Besides Ingram, I was really impressed by Dylan Guenther, who got a goal and an assist, and Nick Schmaltz, who got the go-ahead goal.  I will always be a Colorado Avalanche fan but I think I am going to have a lot of fun cheering for Utah this season!

Avalanche vs. Oilers

Yesterday I went on my first road trip of 2023 to Denver to see the Colorado Avalanche play the Edmonton Oilers last night.  It was my first Avalanche game since I lost my Dad and I really missed him!  When I picked this game I was looking at dates rather than opponents but I think I subconsciously picked the game against the Oilers because my Dad and I were big fans when I was a teenager (because of Wayne Gretzky) and we watched almost every game together in the basement!  As much as I loved the Oilers back in the day, I am definitely an Avalanche fan now and I really wanted them to win!  Both are high scoring teams so this was a defensive showdown with stellar performances from both goaltenders, especially Alexandar Georgiev who stopped 38 shots.  It was my first time seeing Georgiev in action and I was really impressed with him.  The Avalanche scored first with a goal by Ben Meyers four minutes into the first period (which was really exciting) and then Mattias Ekholm scored for Edmonton 34 seconds later (which deflated all of the energy in Ball Arena).  No other goals were scored in regulation but it was still a really exciting game with several penalties and scoring opportunities from both teams.  I particularly enjoyed it when Georgiev saved a shot from a breakaway by Connor McDavid (who is an amazing player) in the second period.  The final minutes of the third period were really intense because Edmonton had a penalty and Colorado did everything but score (I think everyone in my section was standing up the last few minutes).  Just like the previous two meetings between these two teams, the game went into overtime but, unlike those other games, Edmonton scored on a power-play goal by Evan Bouchard to win (I think it is really unfair to call a penalty in overtime unless it is really egregious).  It is always a little disappointing to see the Avalanche lose, especially after driving eight hours to see the game, but I am really glad that I came because it was very cathartic for me.  It made me feel very close to my Dad (I cried a few times) because I have so many memories of Avalanche games with him.

Note:  The Avalanche did get a point for the overtime loss and, because the Minnesota Wild lost their game last night, they clinched home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs!

My Favorite Team vs. My Hometown Team

I have been watching hockey with my Dad for as long as I can remember and we always try to go to at least one Colorado Avalanche game in Denver in the fall and one in the spring.  For our annual fall trip we decided to see the Avalanche play the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Even though both of us are from Ontario, we never cheer for the Leafs (we even cheered for the Avalanche against the Leafs when we were in Toronto a few years ago).  We got up really early yesterday morning and drove to Denver in time to relax before the game.  I always like to get to the Pepsi Center early so I can watch the practice skate, see the starting lineup, and hear the national anthem.  Because the Avs played a Canadian team, we got to hear "O Canada" and both my Dad and I sang really loud!  The Avalanche started really well with a goal from Nathan MacKinnon in the first 31 seconds of the game!  They kept on the attack for the first five minutes of the game and the Leafs couldn't do anything.  Then all of a sudden Toronto scored four goals during the rest of the first period (including one by former Avalanche player Tyson Barrie).  It kind of deflated the crowd a little bit.  During the second period the Avalanche changed goalies from Grubauer to Francouz and he was able to stop the offense.  The Avalanche got a goal by Andre Burakovsky in the second period and another one by Valeri Nichushkin in the third period to get within one.  The Avalanche pulled their goalie during the last few minutes and they really tried to put the puck in the net (it was very exciting) but the Leafs ended up getting an empty net goal to win the game 5-3.  So in the battle between my favorite team and my hometown team, my hometown team won!  Even though the Avalanche lost this game it was still so much fun!  I love everything about hockey, especially watching games with my Dad!

Note:  My favorite player, Mikko Rantanen, didn't play tonight because he is still recovering from an injury (he is close to returning because he has been attending practice skates) but I finally got to see the young phenom, Cale Makar, play in person and he is amazing (he scored in his first game in the NHL which happened to be during the Stanley Cup playoffs).

Spring Avalanche Trip

My Dad and I really like to go to at least one and sometimes two Colorado Avalanche games every season.  We went over Thanksgiving break and decided to take in another game in the spring.  I hadn't used any of my personal days off from school yet so we could basically pick any game we wanted.  I have seen the Avalanche play just about every team in the NHL except for the Winnipeg Jets so that is the game we picked.  It also happened to be the last home game of the regular season so we were hoping that it would be an exciting game with playoff implications.  It was on both counts!  The Avs only needed one point to clinch a playoff spot so they just needed to tie the game.  They got a lot of scoring chances in the first period but the Jets ended up with two goals (one of them should not have counted).  In the second period Tyson Barrie scored a beautiful goal to cut the deficit by one.  The crowd went crazy and we were giving high fives to everyone around us!  It was so much fun!  In the third period Carl Soderberg tied it up with 9:25 remaining.  The crowd went into hysterics at this goal because all we needed was a tie for the playoffs.  I've been to a lot of exciting games before but I don't know if I've ever seen the Pepsi Center this wound up!  With only 1:26 left in the game Colorado got a too many men penalty (which, in my opinion, is one of the stupidest penalties you can get) which left them down a skater at the end of the game.  Every time the Avs iced the puck (sent it down the ice to kill time in the penalty)  the crowd went absolutely crazy until the clock wound down.  The Avs had to start overtime with more than 30 seconds left in the penalty but Erik Johnson took a pass from Nathan MacKinnon to score the winning goal.  It was epic!  The Avs needed one point but ended up with two and are going to the playoffs!  It was such a great game!

Note:  This was my first chance to see our new goalie Philipp Grubauer in action.  He made 34 saves!  I love him!

A Snowy Avalanche Trip

I have been watching hockey with my Dad for as long as I can remember and we are huge fans of the Colorado Avalanche.  We try to see at least one, sometimes two, games in Denver every season and last year we went over Thanksgiving weekend.  Since the weather was nice and the roads were clear then we decided to go once again over Thanksgiving break.  However, this year a huge winter storm decided to hit the mountain states!  It was snowing really hard when we started driving Saturday morning and it took us over two hours to get to Evanston.  Then I-80 was closed when we got there due to heavy winter conditions.  We had to sit there for over two hours before they opened the road again which was a lot of fun.  I usually drive from Little America to Cheyenne but the conditions were so bad that my Dad ended up driving the whole way to Denver which was a good thing because I don't like driving in the snow.  One section was so bad, it was foggy and the snow was blowing on the road, that I thought we wouldn't make it!  We finally made it to our hotel and I had just enough time to change into my jersey before we had to head to the Pepsi Center.  The Avalanche played the Dallas Stars, who are a division rival, and it was an awesome game.  Nathan MacKinnon scored the first goal for the Avalanche in the second period with assists by Gabriel Landeskog and Mikka Rantanen.  These three players are not only the Avalanche top line but they lead the NHL in points and they are so much fun to watch (my favorite player is Rantanen).  Then the Stars scored two goals with less than five minutes left in the third period and it kind of deflated the atmosphere in the Pepsi Center.  Quite a few people even left but you should never leave a game until its over, especially an Avalanche game.  J.T. Compher got a goal with an amazing wrist shot and less than a minute later Rantanen got a beautiful goal!  The energy was incredible!  The Stars pulled their goalie but it wasn't enough and the Avalanche ended up winning 3-2.  This game was so much fun it made all of the hassle of getting there worth it!  We drove home yesterday and the driving conditions were a little better but there were a few sketchy spots.  Even with all of the snow I'm so glad that my Dad and I were able to go on this road trip because we always have so much fun!

Note:  My Dad consented to listen to my Queen playlist on the drive and I think I’ve turned him into a fan!  He loves the song “Radio Ga Ga.”

Go Avs Go!

I was already going to spend part of my spring break in Denver so I spontaneously decided to drive out a day early to see the Colorado Avalanche play the Chicago Blackhawks.  I knew it would be a great game because the Avalanche are definitely in the mix for a Stanley Cup playoff position but I had no idea that it would be one of the best games ever!  I enjoy doing many things by myself but I had never been to a hockey game by myself before.  I used to go to games with my friend Tony and now I usually go with my Dad or my cousins and I wondered how fun it would be with no one to talk to.  I had nothing to fear!  I sat next to two of the rowdiest Avalanche fans in the world and they talked to me the whole night!  In fact, the obnoxious Blackhawks fan sitting behind us thought we were together which was somewhat problematic when they almost got into a fight!  It was so much fun!  With every goal, and there were five of them, we would celebrate by high-fiving and, as the game wore on, hugging each other!  The Avalanche scored a goal on all three power plays, one in each period, and then added two more for good measure in the third period to get the shut-out!  The Pepsi Center was out of control!  I am so glad I decided to go to this game!

Note:  I really missed my Dad!  Not only has he has been my hockey buddy my whole life but he springs for better seats!!

Avalanche Adventure

I thought that my trip to Los Angeles to see Hamilton would be my last road trip of the year (it was a long drive) but my Dad suggested an Avalanche trip over the Thanksgiving break and I was in!  We drove to Denver on Saturday for the game that night and drove home on Sunday.  I always drive from Little America to Cheyenne (I think I drew the short stick because Wyoming is very boring).  For this trip we took my Dad's truck which is very powerful.  I have a tendency to speed any way (especially in Wyoming) but I found it especially hard not to let the beast off the chain.  I had only been driving for about ten minutes when I got pulled over by the Wyoming Highway Patrol for doing 85 in a 75 mph zone.  My Dad thought it was hilarious!  I like to get to the Pepsi Center really early so I can watch the practice skate and I was really blown away by all of the images that they project on the ice when the Avalanche first come out on the ice.  I loved the player introductions with their names and pictures projected on the ice.  It was so cool!  I had never seen that before because this was my first game of the season.  The Avalanche played the Calgary Flames and it was a pretty good game.  The Flames scored first at the end of the first period.  During the second period the Flames had three penalties and Mikka Rantanen scored a pretty shorthanded goal in the third one.  Then the Flames got two quick goals at the end of the period.  The Avalanche are known for coming back during the third period and the Pepsi Center was incredibly loud cheering them on.  Late in the third Nikita Zadorov got a goal and it looked like the Avalanche could pull it off.  They pulled the goalie and it got pretty exciting during the last few minutes but they couldn't quite put the puck in the net.  They ended up losing 3-2.  Even though they lost it was still a really fun game to watch and, as always, I had so much fun with my Dad.  I have been watching hockey with him my whole life!

Colorado Avalanche vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Last spring, when I heard that Air Canada was coming to the Salt Lake City airport, I got really excited!  That meant that I could fly directly from SLC to Toronto for a reasonable price.  I knew that I wanted to plan a trip because I hadn't been to my hometown since 2005!  I've always wanted to see my favorite hockey team, the Colorado Avalanche, play a road game so I thought it would be epic to see them play the Maple Leafs in the Air Canada Centre!  I mentioned it to my Dad and we eagerly awaited the release of the 2016-2017 hockey schedule to see when the two teams would be playing.  When we learned that they would be playing on a weekend, it seemed feasible.  We bought our tickets about a month ago and I flew to Toronto last weekend for an amazing trip (My Dad got there a week earlier).  I can't tell you how amazing it was to be back home for a few days!  My Dad picked me up at the airport and took me visiting people who have known me my whole life and love me.  Brian, my Dad's best friend from childhood, and his wife took us to dinner and we didn't stop talking or laughing.  I got to visit all of my favorite spots, including a quick trip to Niagara Falls to see them illuminated with colored lights, several trips to Tim Hortons for donuts, a visit to my grandparents' graves, and a visit to the locks on the St. Lawrence Seaway (a big cargo ship had just entered a lock when we got there and I got to see it go through).  Sunday night was the game and it was absolutely thrilling to be in the ACC!  I loved all of the Stanley Cup banners!  It was fun to cheer for the road team, especially in a place that loves their team as much as Leafs fans do!  I did, however, see quite a few people in Avalanche jerseys and we would high five each other in solidarity!  My Dad's friend Brian, despite the fact that he lives there, had never been to a game before so we got him a ticket.  He took me to my first Blue Jays game back in the day so I thought it was fun that I got to take him to his first Maple Leafs game!  I asked him who he was going to cheer for and he emphatically said, "Toronto!"  Although, I did catch him cheering for the Avs so maybe I converted him!  It was a great game!  Colorado scored two really pretty power play goals and, after the second one in the third period, the usher in my section came and told me that I was being too loud!  The Avs got two penalties in quick succession late in the third so the Leafs pulled their goalie and scored.  The guy sitting next to me gave me a hard time throughout the whole game so when he started cheering like a crazy man after the goal, I told him that the only way the Leafs could score was when they had a six on three advantage!  The Avs scored an empty net goal in the last few minutes to win 3-1!  It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and having the Avalanche win was like icing on the cake!

It was so much fun to watch my Dad and Brian interact with each other!  They were like two teenage boys!  I think it is amazing that they have been such good friends for so long!

This was definitely a bucket list game for both me and my Dad and I am so glad that we got to do it!

Note:  I have always considered myself to be Canadian and it was very emotional for me to be back home.  While my life is in SLC and it would be difficult for me to pull up stakes and move back, I have to admit that I shed a tear when I boarded the plane to leave!

Spring Break Avalanche Game

Every year my Dad and I try to go to at least one Colorado Avalanche game and this year we picked a game against the Minnesota Wild during my spring break.  It's a long drive but we've done it so many times that it has become part of the experience!  We have traditions and rituals with things we do and places we stop.  Right before we left, Denver had a huge snow storm and I-80 was actually closed for a while which made us nervous to drive but we only had snow flurries here and there.  Whenever I travel to Denver alone I usually stay at the Motel 6 but with my Dad it is first class all the way and we stay at the SpringHill Suites downtown.  This hotel is so nice!  We checked in late Friday afternoon and the plan was to rest for a little while and then go to dinner (I love Old Chicago and we don't have one in SLC) but I fell asleep and, by the time I woke up, it was too late to go anywhere!  I'm such a party animal!

The game was Saturday afternoon and my Dad and I were so excited!  I think the Pepsi Center is such an amazing venue for hockey.  I can smell the ice as soon as I walk in the doors!

We had absolutely fabulous seats right at center ice!  This game was really important for the Avalanche because they are chasing the Wild for a playoff spot and it was intense during the first period.  It felt like playoff hockey to me with lots of shots on goal and really tight defense.  Then the Avalanche totally fell apart in the second period.  Their puck handling was terrible and there were so many giveaways that I stopped counting.  They had several power play opportunities but couldn't convert.  In fact, they didn't even get one shot on goal during one power play.

The only thing that enlivened the second period was a visit from Bernie, the Avalanche mascot.  The Wild scored twice in the second period and then got a short-handed goal and an empty-net goal in the third period.  It was disappointing but, like last year, we invited my cousin Blaine to go to the game with us and it was a lot of fun to talk to him (especially about Batman v Superman).  I love the Colorado Avalanche, so even though they lost the game, and most likely a chance at making the playoffs, I lhad a great time watching them play!  Next year my Dad and I are hoping to see the Avs play the Maple Leafs in Toronto!

Many years ago I started a tradition of getting an Avalanche hat at every game I went to.  Even though I have more hats than I know what to do with, I had to get another one!  I really wanted a hat with the new logo on it and my Dad wanted one, too!

Even though the Avalanche lost, at least we got matching hats!

Note:  Several years ago I almost ran out of gas while driving in Wyoming.  I could have stopped in Green River but I thought I would make it and then barely coasted into Little America only to discover that the power was off!  I vowed that I would never, ever, do that again because my Dad always tells me not to let the tank get that low!  Last night when we reached Green River, we had 1/8th of a tank left.  My Dad and I decided that we could make it to Little America and the gas light immediately came on!  I think we made it to Little America on fumes but, at least, the power was on this time!

A Weekend of Hockey in Denver

I absolutely love watching the Colorado Avalanche play at the Pepsi Center!  My dad and I try to go to at least one game every year (last year I went to three; two with my Dad and one with my cousins).  A couple of weeks ago we chose to go the game against the Calgary Flames (we try to pick a Canadian team so we can hear "O Canada" at the beginning of the game) on Saturday night and we invited my cousin Blaine, who lives in Denver, to go with us.  I counted down the days because I was so excited.  We drove to Denver (about an eight hour drive) and met my cousin Blaine downtown for dinner.  He picked a great place called My Brother's Bar and I ate one of the best burgers I have ever had!  Then we went straight to the Pepsi Center.  I like to get there early because I like to smell the ice (Blaine thought I was weird at first but then he said that you actually could smell the ice) and watch the practice skate.  That gets me really amped up for the game!

It was an incredible game!  The Avalanche are still in the hunt for a playoff spot so they started the game very aggressively!  They got a lot of shots on goal and it was so fun to watch!  At the end of the first period, the Flames really tightened things up and started shooting more.  During the second period, the Avalanche went on a power play and Alex Tanguay got a nice goal.  Just a few minutes later Ryan O'Reilly got a goal which electrified the Pepsi Center.  In the third period, the Flames scored two goals but John Mitchell (with an assist from my favorite player, Matt Duchene) got one of the prettiest goals I've ever seen and, luckily, the play that led to the goal happened right in front of us.  My dad always gets the good seats!  The last five minutes of the game were really tense but Semyon Varlamov (who stopped 29 shots) had an amazing save which got the crowd chanting, "Varly, Varly, Varly!"  I loved it!  The Avalanche won the game 3-2, which was thrilling for me because they lost the last two games I attended.  I loved every minute of this weekend!

Colorado Avalanche Road Trip

Several weeks ago my Dad and I went on a road trip to Denver to see the Colorado Avalanche play the Boston Bruins! I absolutely love doing this!  I have been watching hockey with my Dad for as long as I can remember!  I think I spent my entire adolescence in the basement with him cheering for the Edmonton Oilers.  I have been a fan of the Colorado Avalanche since the Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver in 1995 and I don't think I missed watching a game that entire inaugural season.  I was a huge fan of Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, and Patrick Roy.  Now I love cheering for Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, and Nathan MacKinnon.  The Pepsi Center is an incredible venue for hockey and I love being there, especially with my Dad!  There were lots of Boston Bruins fans at this particular game, including a rather rowdy group in front of us!  Despite the fact that the Avalanche lost to the Bruins 2-0, I thought they played a great game!  They had twice as many shots and there was a  dramatic play to stop a goal on an empty net during the last few seconds.  I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!

Note:  The Avalanche begin their quest for Lord Stanely's Cup tonight against the Minnesota Wild!  I am so excited that I actually get to cheer for my team in the post-season for the first time since 2010!  Go Avs!
