Once on This Island at PTC

Last night I went to see PTC's production of Once on This Island and I absolutely loved it!  On an island in the French Antilles, a young girl is frightened by a storm so a group of storytellers tell her about another girl named Ti Moune (Ava Lyn Smith) who survived a storm to try and calm her.  Ti Moune (Tyla Collier as an adult) is a dark-skinned peasant girl who falls in love with Daniel Beauxhomme (Jordan Alexander), a light-skinned wealthy descendant of a French plantation owner, after she rescues him from a car accident.  This relationship is frowned upon because the peasants and the grand hommes do not interact due to racial and class divisions.  The four gods of the island, Asaka, Mother of the Earth (Galyana Castillo); Agwe, God of Water (Terance Reddick); Erzulie, Goddess of Love (Kristian Espiritu); and Papa Ge, Demon of Death (Paul Jordan Jansen); intercede on her behalf in both positive and negative ways until love triumphs to bring the different groups together and her story is told again and again through the generations.  This fairy tale might not end the way you think it should but it has a beautiful message about love, loss, forgiveness, redemption, prejudice, and the power of storytelling.  I loved all of the Caribbean-inspired music in this show but my favorite songs were "And the Gods Heard Her Prayer," "Rain," "Pray," "Forever Yours," "Mama Will Provide," and "Why We Tell the Story."  Each number involves the clever use of items found around the stage (I especially enjoyed how the gods appeared and disappeared), dazzling choreography, and colorful and vibrant costumes.  The entire cast, many of whom play multiple characters with just the addition of an accessory or prop, is wonderful.  However, I was blown away by Collier (who has a beautiful voice and is an exceptional dancer) because she embodies so many emotions in her portrayal of a woman who sacrifices herself for love.   This is a beautiful and powerful production that should not be missed (go here for tickets).

The Play That Goes Wrong at PTC

Last night I went to see the madcap comedy The Play That Goes Wrong at Pioneer Theatre and I don't remember when I have laughed so much!  The titular play is Susie H. K. Brideswell's The Murder at Haversham Manor and it is being performed by the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society.  The cast consists of Maxwell Benjamin Chesterwitz (Jordan Sobel) as Cecil Haversham/ Arthur the Gardener, Chris Daniels (William Connell) as Inspector Carter, Jonathan Harris (Brandon Contreras) as Charles Haversham, Robert John Parry III (Greg Balla) as Thomas Colleymoore, Dennis Timbertop (Eric Santagata) as Perkins the Butler, and Sandra Wilkinson (Ruth Pferdehirt) as Florence Colleymoore.  It is directed by Chris Daniels with Set Design, Costume Design, and Hair Design by Chris Daniels.  The Fight Choreographer is Chris Daniels, the Stage Manger is Annie Macdonald (Kirsten Wyatt) and the Sound and Lighting Technician is Trevor Santos (Archelaus Crisanto).  Literally everything that can go wrong does go wrong with this play including a set that is slowly falling apart, misplaced and malfunctioning props, a sound designer who keeps playing Duran Duran instead of the real sound cues, a missing dog, an actor playing a dead body who can't stay still, an actor who can't remember his lines, and a leading lady who is injured and must be replaced by her unprepared understudy.  The script is absolutely hilarious but it is also extremely clever with references that theatre people will definitely enjoy (be sure to read the playbill for The Murder at Haversham Manor within the playbill for The Play That Goes Wrong).  The entire cast is outstanding with brilliant comedic timing.  The physical comedy will make you laugh out loud!  My favorite scenes involved a drawn out fight between Sandra and her understudy for the chance to play Florence, when Thomas and Cecil break their swords and have to finish their duel with their arms, and when Perkins must finish the show handcuffed to a chaise lounge because the prop keys have been lost.  The set is fantastic because it falls apart so spectacularly, especially the study!  I don't think I stopped laughing through the entire show (I was even laughing before it started because the technical crew was searching the audience frantically for the missing dog).  This is a production that everyone will enjoy and I highly recommend it for a fun night out!  It runs at PTC through December 21 (go here for tickets).

Note:  This play makes references to Duran Duran and Hamlet so it was basically written for me!

The Lifespan of a Fact at PTC

Last night I went to see The Lifespan of a Fact, the current production at PTC.  The premise of this play was very intriguing to me so I was eager to see it.  When a powerful essay written by John D'Agata (Ben Cherry) lands on the desk of magazine editor Emily Penrose (Constance Macy), she knows it has the potential to impact her magazine's bottom line and possibly win some major awards.  She wants to use it as the cover story but she is on a tight deadline.  She enlists a young Harvard-educated intern named Jim Fingal (John Kroft) to fact-check it over the weekend.  All she wants is a good-faith effort to keep the lawyers happy but Fingal, wanting to do a good job to impress her, obsessively researches every minute detail.  He even goes so far as to fly to Las Vegas to verify some details and to get clarification from the author himself.  D'Agata does not take kindly to having his work questioned so Penrose eventually ends up in Las Vegas to play referee between the two of them (in some highly amusing scenes).  D'Agata argues that he is trying to find a universal truth about the meaning of life through the story of a boy who commits suicide and that the details do not matter.  Fingal argues that, in an age when anyone with a smartphone can verify every fact, he will lose credibility if anything is proven to be false thereby lessening the impact.  I really enjoyed the verbal sparring between the two characters and I found myself agreeing with both sides of the argument (I love and hate it when that happens).  My favorite scene occurs near the end of the play when, after a night of arguing back and forth, Penrose must make a decision whether to publish or not.  The three of them read the paragraph about the boy's final moments before jumping off a building aloud and are incredibly moved.  The audience is left to wonder if the emotional impact of that paragraph would be diminished if the prose was amended to correct a bit of minutiae.  The topic is particularly salient in the age of "fake news" and I think it is very powerful.  All three characters are interesting and compelling and the actors give wonderful performances.  Even though it is very cerebral without a lot of action, the narrative moves at a very steady pace (there is no intermission) so I was always completely engaged.  This play will definitely give you a lot to think about and I highly recommend it!  The Lifespan of a Fact runs at PTC until November 16 (go here for tickets).

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at PTC

I am a huge fan of PTC's concert series!  I have seen their productions of The Rocky Horror Show, Chess, In the Heights, and La Cage aux Folles (and enjoyed them immensely) but my favorite is definitely this year's production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.  I saw this show last night and I can't remember when I've laughed so hard!  Concert versions are stripped down performances where the actors use scripts (because they have a very short time to rehearse) and there are minimal costumes, sets, and props to let the music take center stage.  Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the perfect musical for this format because the songs are absolutely hilarious as they are without much staging.  The story follows Lawrence Jameson (Brent Barrett), a charming and sophisticated international playboy, as he cons a wealthy woman named Muriel Eubanks (Elizabeth Ward Land), who is visiting the French Riviera from Omaha, by pretending to be a prince fighting a revolution to reclaim his country.  Soon an amateur con artist named Freddy Benson (Matthew Hydzik) comes to the Riviera and Jameson decides to take him under his wing to keep him from stealing his marks. When he tries to con Jolene Oakes (Talya Groves), an heiress from Oklahoma, he enlists Benson's help to get him out of an accidental engagement.  When they both take credit for the success of the plan, they bet each other that they can each con $50,000 from Christine Colgate (Kate Fahrner), an heiress from Cincinnati, and chaos ensues!  Benson pretends to be a paralyzed soldier and Jameson pretends to be a Viennese psychiatrist but who is conning who?  Even though there isn't a lot of blocking and choreography, there is still quite a bit of physical comedy and both Barrett and Hydzik are brilliant, especially during the songs "All About Ruprecht" and "Ruffhousin' Mit Shuffhausen."  I also really liked "Great Big Stuff," "The More We Dance," and "Love Is My Legs" because they are completely over the top and made me laugh out loud!   Barrett and Hydzik have wonderful comedic timing and great chemistry together and the ensemble is highly entertaining!  The band, which is on stage during the performance, is fantastic and music director Phil Reno is incorporated into the action with amusing results. I don't think I stopped laughing through the whole show so I highly recommend it for a fun night out!  There are only two more performances today so act quickly (go here for tickets).

Cagney at PTC

The musical Cagney is getting a lot of buzz because PTC's expanded production of the show is a preview before eventually transferring to Broadway!  I was so excited to see it last night and, even though I was really tired (I had parent teacher conferences this week), I enjoyed this tap-dancing extravaganza!  The story about the life and career of James Cagney (Robert Creighton) is framed by the presentation of a SAG Lifetime Achievement Award to Cagney by Jack Warner (Darrin Baker), with whom he has an acrimonious relationship, in 1978.  The show begins with Warner bragging about plucking Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Lauren Bacall, and James Cagney out of obscurity to turn them into stars.  It then traces Cagney's humble beginnings as a laborer in New York City, to a job as a member of the chorus in a vaudeville act to pay the bills, then as a featured performer along with his future wife Willie (Jessica Wackenfuss) which leads to a role on Broadway and then to the momentous call from Jack Warner offering him a role in The Public Enemy, where he memorably ad libs a scene throwing a grapefruit in his costar's face and becomes a star.  Cagney fears that he is being typecast as a gangster, leading to friction with Warner, until he returns to the studio to star in one of his most memorable movies, White Heat.  Since Cagney worried about being remembered only for his gangster roles, his entire Hollywood career is compressed into two very clever numbers, "Warner at Work," when he is a part of the studio system, and "Cagney at Work," when he has his own production company.  The rest of the show focuses on Cagney as a song and dance man with with big production numbers, including his vaudeville number "Every Sailor," his performance as George M. Cohan in the movie Yankee Doodle Dandy, and his USO shows with Bob Hope (Matt Crowle) during the war.  I really enjoyed these numbers because the choreography is spectacular and Creighton is an exceptionally agile tap dancer.  My favorite song in the show is "Tough Guy," in which Cagney accepts his legacy, because Creighton imbues it with so much pathos.  Cagney's story is interesting and compelling and this musical hearkens back to a by-gone era with wonderful performances.  My only criticism, and it is a big one, is that the projections used throughout the entire show are out of focus and I found this to be incredibly distracting!  I would still recommend seeing this show about a "hoofer who got lucky in the movies."  It runs at PTC until October 5 (go here for tickets).

Note:  I didn't know a lot about James Cagney before seeing this musical.  Now I want to watch some of his movies, especially The Public Enemy and White Heat.

Grease at PTC

When I saw the Broadway touring production of Grease a number of years ago, I have to admit that I was really disappointed because the stage musical is so different from the iconic movie.  I love the movie (I have seen it more times than I can count, even on the big screen) so I just couldn't help but compare it, often unfavorably, to the musical.  I wondered if I would have the same reaction to PTC's current production last night.  Unfortunately, despite great performances from a talented cast and really fun choreography, it just fell flat for me.  I couldn't turn off the voice inside my head which kept pointing out the differences from the movie (I had a similar reaction to the stage version of The Sound of Music).  Like the movie, Rydell High School during the 1950s is the setting for the romance between bad boy Danny Zuko (Pascal Pastrana) and good girl Sandy Dumbrowski (Emma Hearn), but, unlike the movie, the characters hardly spend any time together before the big finale.  Danny has more scenes with Patty Simcox (Lindsie Kongsore) and Betty Rizzo (Alex Kidder) than with Sandy and she doesn't even go to the sock hop where he wins the dance competition with Cha-Cha DiGregorio (Ashley Marinelli).  Many of the songs in this version are different from the movie.  It was very jarring to me when I would anticipate a particular scene and a different song would be performed such as "Rydell Alma Mater" at the beginning of the show, "Freddy, My Love" during the sleepover, "Alone at the Drive-In Movie" when Sandy walks out on him, and "All Choked Up" when Sandy's transformation is revealed.  All of these songs are performed very well but I was expecting to hear "Grease," "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee" (which is performed in a different scene), "Sandy," and "You're the One That I Want" (which is added after the bows).  The song "Mooning" is a lot of fun but I didn't really care about the romance between Roger (Michael Schimmele) and Jan (Kate Cassidy Ryan) and "Shakin' at the High School Hop" and "Rock and Roll Party Queen" go on for too long making the second act really drag.  Also, I didn't really care for how "Beauty School Drop-Out" is staged because it is very incongruous and played merely for laughs.  Having said that, I loved "Summer Nights," "Greased Lightnin'," and "Born to Hand Jive" because they are staged very much like in the movie!  To be fair, the actors do a great job with the material and the sets and costumes evoke a fun nostalgic vibe, especially The Burger Palace.  Most people will really enjoy this production which runs through May 25 (go here for tickets).  I think I will just stick to the movie from now on.

Note:  This is truly petty but it even bothered me that Rydell's colors are blue and yellow in this show because they are red and white in the movie!

Sweat at PTC

Last night I went to see Sweat, the latest production at PTC which chronicles the demise of the industrial town of Reading, Pennsylvania when the once enviable jobs at factories are outsourced.  I didn't know anything about this play when I walked into the theater but I found it to be incredibly compelling.  The action takes place at a working class bar frequented by Tracey (Margot White), Jessie (Susanna Florence), and Cynthia (Nafeesa Monroe) who work the line at a local manufacturing plant.  Cynthia's estranged husband Brucie (Vince McGill) wanders in and out with a cautionary tale about how he lost his job at another factory when management wanted to cut costs and shut the workers out when the union took a hard line.  Stan (Christopher Duvall), a former factory worker severely injured on the job, is the bartender who lends a sympathetic ear.  Oscar (Xavier Reyes), the barback who is viewed as an immigrant because he is Hispanic, is trying to find a better job.  When Cynthia is given a promotion from the line to low-level management, Tracey, who also applied for the job, believes it is because Cynthia is African-American and she blames her when the factory wants to cut salaries and benefits and then locks them out.  Jason (Callum Adams) and Chris (Hassiem Muhammad), the sons of Tracey and Cynthia, respecively, who also work at the factory, blame Oscar when he crosses the picket line to take a job at the factory leading to tragedy.  What I found so interesting about this story is that the audience is clearly meant to sympathize with the workers who have given more than twenty years of their lives to a company that only cares about the bottom line but playwright Lynn Nottage also wants her protagonists to be held accountable for lashing out at the wrong people (Hispanics and African-Americans) instead of blaming corporate America.  This production is so well done and the ensemble cast is outstanding.  Every single character elicits sympathy and understanding even when expressing opposing viewpoints.  Almost all of the action takes place in one location and the choreography moving the characters in and out of the bar is very innovative.  The bar itself is fabulous with so much detail (I loved all of the sports pennants and neon signs for local beers).  I really enjoyed this production but it should be noted that there is an excessive amount of profanity (many people around me left at intermission) and there were several racial slurs that really upset me.  Sweat runs at PTC through April 13 (tickets may be purchased here).

La Cage aux Folles at PTC

Several years ago PTC created a series featuring rarely performed musicals in concert format.  The actors use scripts and there are minimal costumes, sets, and props to let the music take center stage.  They began with The Rocky Horror Show (which was so popular that PTC presented it two years in a row) and continued with Chess and In the Heights.  I am a huge fan of this concept and I was excited to learn that this year's show was La Cage aux Folles because I've never seen it before.  I saw it last night and it was so much fun!  Georges (James Patterson) is an impresario of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring performers in drag and Albin (Jamison Stern) is his partner and star attraction.  Chaos ensues when Georges's son Jean-Michel (Patrick Ryan Castle) announces that he is engaged to Anne (Barbara Camara), the daughter of a conservative politician (former Utah senator Jim Dabakis) who wants to meet his family.  This show is full of laughs and big song and dance numbers (this has the most extensive choreography I've seen in PTC's concert versions) but it is also very heartwarming because it is, ultimately, about the importance of family.  The entire cast is very strong but Patterson has an incredible voice, especially in "Song in the Sand," and Brandon Contreras steals every scene he is in as Albin's "maid."   Stern is also fantastic, especially when he performs as the drag queen Za Za with the Cagelles.  I thought the scene where Georges tries to teach Albin how to be more masculine was the funniest thing I had ever seen until Senator Jim Dabakis appeared in drag at the end of the show.  That alone was worth the price of admission!  I enjoyed this show so much and I can't wait to see what the concert production will be next year.

Note:  One of the characters in this show is named Phaedra!  I can't think of a better name for a drag queen!

Once at PTC

When I saw the Broadway touring production of Once several years ago, I didn't know anything about the musical.  However, it quickly became one of my favorites because of the bittersweet love story and the incredibly beautiful music!  So I was thrilled to see PTC's version last night and I fell in love with the show all over again!  A Guy (Roderick Lawrence) is singing one of his songs on the street in Dublin when a Girl (Hillary Porter) hears him and strikes up a conversation.  She really likes his song but he tells her that he wants to give up on music because all of his songs were written about a girl who left him to go to New York.  She encourages him to sing more of his songs and eventually helps him record a demo.  He begins to have feelings for her and tells her that he may have written the songs for another girl but now he is singing them for her.  She knows that she needs to reconcile with her estranged husband for the sake of her daughter and that he needs to go to New York to play his music for his former girlfriend so she convinces him to go.  If you have ever had someone come into your life for just a brief moment but have a profound impact on it then this story will break your heart.  I had tears streaming down my face at the end.   The staging of this show is quite different from the Broadway version but I really liked the use of the turntable and the guitar motif.  The entire cast is unbelievably talented (all of the secondary characters in the show play a variety of instruments live on stage) but I was especially impressed with both Porter and Lawrence (I really loved Lawrence in this role).  They have beautiful voices and are outstanding musicians (piano and guitar, respectively).  Their renditions of my three favorite songs, "Falling Slowly," "If You Want Me," and "Gold," gave me goosebumps!  This just might be my very favorite production by PTC!  There is quite a bit of profanity (they are Irish, after all) but if you are not bothered by that I highly recommend this wonderful show (go here for tickets) which runs through March 2.

The Lion in Winter at PTC

Last night I went to see The Lion in Winter, the current production at Pioneer Theater (I will review the final film in my winter break movie marathon tomorrow).  It is Christmas Eve 1183 and King Henry II of England (Esau Pritchett) has summoned his family to spend the holiday together.  This includes his sons Richard (William Connell), Geoffrey (Damian Jermaine Thompson), and John (Austin Reed Alleman) as well as his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Celeste Ciulla), who has spent the past ten years as his prisoner for staging a rebellion against him.  Since King Philip of France (Grayson DeJesus) is pressuring him to wed his sister Alais (Maryam Abdi) to the heir to the throne, Henry uses this opportunity to decide the succession.  He advocates for John simply because he knows that Eleanor wants her favorite son, Richard, to be the next king.  This pits brother against brother as they scheme, manipulate, plot, and form and break alliances.  It is so much fun to watch.  But the real fireworks come in the scenes between Pritchett and Ciulla as they spar with each other.  Their performances are melodramatic and completely over the top but this is really effective because everything they say is a calculated performance for an audience of one.  They have great chemistry together and I found them to be riveting.  The princes are the ultimate pawns in their parents' battle with each other and, while they sometimes come across as caricatures of the oldest (Richard is the leader), middle (Geoffrey is ignored), and youngest (John is petulant) children in a family, they each have their moments of vulnerability. What I liked most about this production is that, while it is set during the 12th century, it still has a contemporary vibe to it with a message that modern audiences can relate to (when Eleanor says, "It's 1183 and we're still barbarians," it got a huge response from the crowd).  This modern aesthetic is reflected in the set and the costume design.  There are the traditional Gothic arches but they have LED lights on top which change colors during scene changes to reflect the mood.  The costumes have medieval silhouettes and include chain mail and cloaks lined with fur but they feature very modern fabrics and colors (John and Geoffrey even wear athletic shoes).  I really enjoyed this play and would recommend it (go here for tickets).

Note:  The Lion in Winter is one of the very first plays I saw at the Utah Shakespeare Festival when I was in college.  I was fascinated by Eleanor of Aquitaine, as a character and a historical figure, which prompted me to research her and watch the Academy Award winning movie starring Katharine Hepburn in the role.  Good stuff!

Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley at PTC

Since I am a huge fan of Jane Austen in general and of Pride and Prejudice in particular, I have been anticipating PTC's current production for months!  Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley takes the beloved characters we know so well and places them in a delightful drawing room comedy that is perfect for the holidays!  Mr. and Mrs. Darcy (Greg Balla and Emily Nash, respectively) invite the entire Bennet family to Pemberley for Christmas.  Mr. and Mrs. Bingley (Logan James Hall and Rachel Clausen, respectively) are expecting a baby imminently, Mrs. Wickham (Jessica Naimy) is lonely and unhappy in her marriage to Mr. Wickham, and Mary Bennet (Elizabeth Ramos) is lamenting the fact that she has been abandoned and forgotten by her sisters at Longbourn.  Mr. Darcy reveals that, since Lady Catherine de Bourgh has recently died, he has invited the new heir to Rosings, Arthur de Bourgh (Jamen Nanthakumar), to Pemberley for Christmas.  He takes an immediately liking to Mary (he likes to read as much as she does) but Mrs. Wickham flirts outrageously with him leading to a misunderstanding involving love letters.  When this is resolved, Catherine de Bourgh's daughter, Anne (Savannah Moffat), arrives declaring herself to be engaged to her cousin.  Can the former Bennet sisters get Mary and Arthur back together?  I thoroughly enjoyed this charming production!  What I liked most is that the characterizations from the novel are completely maintained.  I know these characters intimately and they are immediately recognizable.  My favorite scenes are those when Arthur asks Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley for advice on courting a Bennet sister (since they are such experts).  Mr. Darcy suggests writing a letter declaring his feelings and Mr. Bingley suggests that he simply ask Mary if she likes him.  So clever!  The entire cast is outstanding but Nanthakumar and Ramos are hilarious to watch as Arthur and Mary try awkwardly to declare their love to each other.  Balla and Hall are also really fun together as Darcy and Bingley contemplate their status as happily married men.  The set, filled with beautiful Regency furniture and a Christmas tree which is the source of much amusement, and the costumes, in rich and sumptuous fabrics, do much to evoke 19th century England.  Sometimes the action is quite slow but the witty banter is hilarious!  If you are a fan of Pride and Prejudice, this play is sure to delight you.  It runs through Dec. 15 (tickets may be purchased here).

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at PTC

I have never seen the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street before (or the movie version, either) but, since I am a huge fan of Stephen Sondheim, I have been looking forward to Pioneer Theatre's production for a long time!  I finally had the chance to see it last night and it is incredible!  It is one of the darkest musicals I've ever seen so, of course, I loved it!  Sweeney Todd (Kevin Earley) is a Victorian-era barber who has just returned to London after 15 years of exile in Australia.  When he learns the fate of his wife and daughter, he immediately wants to get revenge on Judge Turpin (Joe Dellger), the man who ruined his life.  He goes back to his former rooms above the pie shop run by Mrs. Lovett (Anne Tolpegin) to discover that she has kept all of his barbering tools.  He decides to set up shop and lure the judge in for a shave so he can slit his throat.  However, the judge eludes him and he vows vengeance on the whole human race.  He begins to kill all of his customers and Mrs. Lovett uses the bodies in her meat pies!  Eventually, his quest for revenge turns to madness.  As with all Stephen Sondheim musicals, the music is absolutely brilliant and the songs have an almost operatic quality. Both Earley and Tolpegin have fantastic voices and really bring these despicable characters to life in a way that is both comedic and tragic.  I especially enjoyed Tolpegin's renditions of "The Worst Pies in London" and "By The Sea" and I laughed out loud when the two of them sang "A Little Priest."  I also really liked "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" and all of its many reprises sung by the ensemble because the various Londoners reminded me a bit of a Greek chorus.  The set is amazing with two rusted cogwheels in the center of the stage to represent the industrialization of London.  I also loved the barber chair which sent Sweeney's victims to the bakehouse in the basement.  The use of fog and lighting added much to the spooky atmosphere and the special effects, especially all of the blood as Sweeney slit his victim's throats, were great.  The show is gruesome but it is so much fun and I highly recommend it (go here for tickets).

Oslo at PTC

I made several different plans to see Oslo, the Tony Award winning play opening the 2018-2019 season at PTC, but they all fell through for one reason or another.  I finally had the chance to see it last night with my friend (we both have rush passes) and I thought it was absolutely brilliant.  I wish that I had time to see it again.  It tells the behind-the-scenes story of how the Oslo Accords, the first ever agreement between Israel and the PLO in 1993, came to be.  Terje Rod-Larsen (Jeff Talbott), the Executive Director of the Fafo Institute, and his wife Mona Juul (Kate Middleton), an official in the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, witness a riot while traveling through the Gaza Strip in Israel.  Terje is forever changed by the incident and, believing that the current model of negotiation will never work, decides to get low-level representatives from the PLO, Ahmed Qurie (Demosthenes Chrysan) and Hassan Asfour (Thamer Jendoubi), and Israel, Yair Hirschfeld (Neal Benari) and Ron Pundak (Max Woertendyke), to meet in secret in Oslo.  He believes that if they get to know each other as men they will learn to trust each other and this provides a bit of comic relief.  The story details the back and forth between the two groups as they work towards peace and it does involve lots of dialogue rather than action.  As a former world geography teacher I pay close attention to world events, especially in the Middle East, so it was really easy for me to follow what was happening but my friend found it very compelling, as well.  The pacing kept me engaged (although I thought it was over before the second intermission) and the actors give outstanding performances.  I also really liked the staging, which is minimal to allow for quick transformations.  I highly recommend this production which runs through next week (tickets may be purchased here).

Mamma Mia at PTC

I have seen the Broadway touring production of Mamma Mia several times and I've even seen it in London's West End twice (once on a theater trip with PTC and once with my Mom who danced in the aisle) so I was really curious to see what a regional theater like PTC would do with it.  I am happy to report that I loved their version and I think some of the choreography, especially in "Lay All Your Love On Me" (more about that in a minute) and "Voulez-Vous," even surpassed the Broadway version.  This musical features some of Abba's best known songs, such as "Dancing Queen," "Money, Money, Money," "S.O.S.," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," and, of course, "Mamma Mia."  Sophie Sheridan (Kathryn Brunner) wants her father to walk her down the aisle at her wedding but she doesn't know who he is.  When she reads her mother's diary, she discovers three possibilities:  Sam Carmichael (Brian Sutherland), Bill Austin (Dan Sharkey), and Harry Bright (Paul Castree).  Without telling her mother Donna (Coleen Sexton), she invites all three of them to the wedding and chaos ensues!  The cast is incredible in this show, especially Sexton!  During the fourth performance she broke her foot but decided to continue the run, wearing a boot and occasionally using crutches.  When I heard about this, I worried that this might take me out of the illusion of the show.  But the production team did such a great job of adjusting the costumes, choreography, and lighting (in just 24 hours) that, after her initial entrance on stage, I really didn't notice at all.  Sexton is definitely a trooper (a super trouper?) for continuing to perform with such a severe injury!  As great as the main cast is, I think the male ensemble steal the show with their scuba gear in "Lay All Your Love On Me" and their acrobatics in "Does Your Mother Know?"  This show is so much fun and I absolutely recommend that you take a chance (too much?) on PTC and see one of the remaining performances (go here for tickets).

Twelfth Night at PTC

You might think that after a day spent teaching A Midsummer Night's Dream to sophomores I wouldn't want to spend the evening attending yet another Shakespeare play.  If the play in question is PTC's production of the hilarious comedy Twelfth Night you would be wrong because that is exactly what I did last night and I loved it!  Sebastian (Zach Fifer) and his twin sister Viola (Grace Morrison) are shipwrecked in a terrible storm and each thinks that the other is dead.  Viola disguises herself as a man called Cesario and offers her services to the Duke Orsino (A.K. Murtadha) with whom she immediately falls in love.  Orsino is desperately in love with the Countess Olivia (Kelsey Rainwater), who is in mourning for her brother, and sends Cesario to make overtures on his behalf to her but she, in turn, falls in love with Cesario.  Meanwhile, Sebastian is wandering around and is, of course, mistaken for Cesario.  Chaos ensues!   There is a secondary story, which is the source of much amusement, involving Malvolio (David Andrew Macdonald), a priggish steward in Olivia's household.  He makes life difficult for the other members of Olivia's household, most notably Sir Toby Belch (Kenajuan Bentley), Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Conner Marx), and Olivia's gentlewoman Maria (Susanna Florence).  To get their revenge they have Maria mimic Olivia's handwriting and send a letter to Malvolio from Olivia professing her love for him, requesting that he wear yellow stockings with cross garters.  These scenes involve a lot of physical comedy and they are so funny!  I was laughing out loud along with everyone else in the audience.  I usually don't like it when the setting is changed in a Shakespeare play (I'm a purist) but I thought that having the action take place in New Orleans after a hurricane during Mardi Gras was incredibly effective and I loved the set design and costumes.  This allowed the character of Feste (Richard E. Waits) to become a sort of Greek chorus singing old spirituals (which Waits composed for this production).  Sometimes you have to suspend your disbelief a little bit with this play but Fifer and Morrison look so much alike that it is easy to see why they would be mistaken for each other.  All of the actors give spirited performances and I really enjoyed myself.  I highly recommend this show but the production closes on Saturday so get tickets (go here) quickly!

Note:  Last night's audience was a bit more appreciative of Shakespeare than my sophomores!

In the Heights at PTC

Before Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote and starred in another Tony Award winning musical called In the Heights.  I have seen it a couple of times (including a full production at PTC in 2012 and the Broadway touring production) and I really love it, maybe not as much as Hamilton, because it is a very powerful story about love for a community and the family you make with those around you.  Pioneer Theatre Company is currently performing the concert version, a stripped down performance with minimal blocking and choreography (I am a huge fan of this concept and really enjoyed  the concert versions of The Rocky Horror Show and Chess).  My friend Angela and I went to see the performance last night and I was a little bit afraid of her reaction because I have a tendency to really hype the things I love and I worried that I may have overdone it.  Luckily she absolutely loved it and commented that she was really impressed with how well it was staged. The story revolves around a woman named Claudia (Jayne Luke) who acts as an abuela (grandmother) to everyone in a small community in Washington Heights.  Usnavi (Diego Klock-Perez) runs a bodega which is beset with problems, such as a refrigerator that doesn't work, and tries to keep his wayward cousin Sonny (Tomas Joaquin Matos) in line.  He dreams of returning to the cool breezes of the Dominican Republic.  Vanessa (Ariana Escalante) is hoping to escape the barrio, and an abusive mother, to move downtown but a credit check for her new apartment stands in her way.  Nina (Micki Martinez) is the pride of her parents (Enrique Acevedo and Melissa Blatherwick) and the whole neighborhood because she received a scholarship to Stanford.  But college is a lot harder than she thought it would be, especially when you have to work two jobs to make ends meet, and she is thinking of quitting.  Will all of their worries be solved when Abuela Claudia wins the lottery?  In the concert version the music takes center stage and I really enjoyed all of the songs but my favorites were "When You're Home," "Sunrise," "Alabanza," and "When the Sun Goes Down." The actors are fantastic and give incredibly passionate performances.  I was particularly impressed with Martinez’s characterization of Nina because you could really feel her pain at disappointing her community and Klock-Perez looks and sounds so much like Lin-Manuel Miranda that it is uncanny! This production is just wonderful and I highly recommend getting a ticket (go here) to the final performance tonight!

Note:  This is the first time that I have seen In the Heights after seeing Hamilton and I was particularly struck by the similarities.  You can definitely see Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical progression from one to the next.

i at PTC

Last night I went to the world premiere of an incredibly thought-provoking play by Jeff Talbott called i.  I didn't know anything about it because there were no director's notes provided in the program and the setting was listed as a city sometime soon.  Now that I have seen it I think it is much better to go in blind and let the events (and the plot twist) surprise you.  It begins with a clearly distraught young woman named Sarah Cooper (Kathleen McElfresh) as she is interviewed by a doctor before undergoing a mysterious medical procedure.  The next time we see her she seems to be a completely different woman who has relocated to another city.  Then she meets Jake Bellamy (Todd Gearhart) and her new life begins to unravel.  This play is a profound meditation on identity and my mind was swirling with so many ideas as I left the theater!  What role do our memories play in who we are?  Is it better to feel nothing at all rather than feel sad?  Just because something is possible does that mean it should be done?   This play requires quite a bit of engagement as it is comprised mostly of intimate conversations between the two main characters (several people sitting near me were clearly restless) but I really enjoyed it.  The minimal set, composed of moving plexiglass panels, and the lighting cues are very effective at conveying the isolation felt by the main characters.  Both McElfresh and Gearhart give highly nuanced performances that I found to be incredibly affecting and I was very impressed by the sheer number of characters portrayed by Nefeesa Monroe.  I applaud Pioneer Theatre for its willingness to produce new works like this and I highly recommend this production.  It runs through March 3 and tickets may be purchased here.

Bright Star at PTC

When I went to New York almost two years ago there was one night when the group didn't have theatre tickets together and we were free to get tickets on our own.  I thought about Waitress (which I eventually saw with my friend Esther) and I also thought about Bright Star because I had heard so many great things about it.  But then Hamilton became a possibility and that eclipsed everything else!  Of course, seeing the original cast of Hamilton on Broadway was a dream come true but there was a little part of me that regretted the fact that I didn't get a chance to see Bright Star.  Little did I know that the show would be coming to Salt Lake City so soon and that almost the entire cast would be reprising their roles from the Broadway production, including the incomparable Carmen Cusack as Alice Murphy!  It is fantastic and to say that I loved it would be an understatement.  Featuring music and lyrics by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, the story takes place in North Carolina during the 1920s and just after World War II.  After returning from the war, Billy Cane (A.J. Shively) briefly returns to his small town and his childhood friend Margot (Maddie Shea Baldwin) but he decides to try writing for a magazine in Asheville and meets the uptight editor, Alice Murphy, who once made Hemingway cry.  When the magazine staff tease Alice about her boring existence, we see her (literally) transform into a wild and rebellious girl in love with Jimmy Ray Dobbs (Patrick Cummings).  The narrative goes back and forth from one timeline to the other as Alice learns to deal with heartache and loss and Billy learns the importance of home and the one who really loves him.  There is a plot twist that I predicted almost immediately but I was still completely engaged with the story because the performances are wonderful and the bluegrass music is incredible!  The song "Please Don't Take Him" brought tears to my eyes and I do not know how Cusack can sing it with such emotion night after night.  I think my favorite song in the show is "Asheville" because it is sung by a girl who is worried that the boy she loves will forget all about her when he goes to the big city.  Baldwin fills it with such longing and I liked how the song is staged.  In fact, the staging of the entire show is extremely clever with the ensemble cast moving props and scenery on and off stage seamlessly.  Finally, the band, sitting in a rustic cottage that is moved to various places on stage, is superb.  I especially enjoyed the fiddle solos played by Martha McDonnell.  Pioneer Theatre Company is only the third regional theater to produce this musical and I consider myself lucky to get to see such an amazing cast right here in SLC!  I highly recommend seeing this show, but you better hurry because tickets are going fast!  The rush pass line was the longest I've seen for any show at PTC (Including Newsies!).  Go here for tickets and information.

Newsies at PTC

There was a time when the Disney musical Newsies was at the top of my list of shows that I wanted to see.  Such was my mania to see it that I went to Los Angeles to see it at the Pantages Theatre only to learn that the Broadway touring company would be coming to SLC the following year.  Now it seems as if it is everywhere.  The Tuacahn Amphitheatre produced it last summer and both PTC and HCT have the popular show in their 2017-2018 schedules.  I had the chance to see it at Pioneer Theatre last night (I have a ticket to Hale's version next June) and it is fantastic!  It definitely rivals the Broadway versions that I've seen!  In 1899 a group of newspaper delivery boys, let by Jack Kelly (Jonathan Shew), goes on strike to protest Joseph Pulitzer (William Parry) raising the price of newspapers.  With a little help from an intrepid reporter named Katherine (Nadia Vynn) and Governor Roosevelt (Richie Call) himself, the newsies score a victory for all of the working children in New York.  The staging and choreography stays true to the original on Broadway with just a few new touches to keep it fresh and exciting.  The highlight of this show has always been the dancing and the dancers in this show are exhilarating!   The audience practically cheered out loud with every high energy leap and spin!  The big production numbers are so much fun including "Carrying the Banner," "Seize the Day," "King of New York," "Once and For All," and my favorite song in the show, "The World Will Know."  Shew is as handsome, charismatic, and talented as any Jack I've seen before and I loved his affecting rendition of "Santa Fe."  Vynn just might be my favorite Katherine and I was tapping my toes to "Watch What Happens."  I also really liked Stephen Michael Langton as Davey (he played Davey in the Broadway touring company).  Do yourself a favor and take your teenagers to see this show (If they are anything like the students of Hunter High I bet they are dying to see it) but get tickets soon because the theatre was packed on a Monday (go here for tickets).  It runs at PTC until Dec. 20.

Note:  I currently have what I call Joseph fatigue because Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is performed so often in Utah.  I hope the same thing doesn't happen with this show.

A Comedy of Tenors at PTC

Several years ago I saw Lend Me A Tenor at the Utah Shakespeare Festival and I thought it was so much fun!  When I found out that the sequel, A Comedy of Tenors, would be a part of PTC's 2017-2018 season I got really excited.  This show is a hilarious romp through an elegant Parisian hotel suite as an impresario (Andy Prosky) tries to get three temperamental tenors (Hansel Tan, Gregory North, and Storm Lineberger) to stop fighting long enough to take the stage for the concert of the century.  Add a bellhop looking for his big break, misunderstandings galore, mistaken identities with comedic results, characters in various stages of undress hiding from each other, and plenty of face slapping and door slamming and you have a delightful evening of theatre.  What makes this show so much fun is the manic physical comedy and all of the actors have superb comedic timing.  At one point, there was so much running around I couldn't keep track of what was happening and there are some astoundingly quick costume changes.  I loved it and I laughed out loud multiple times as did everyone around me.  Oh and by the way, all three of our tenors can really sing!  They performed an impressive rendition of "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" from Verdi's La Traviata.  It is a bit risque in some parts but that just adds to the fun.  I would highly recommend this delightful production (tickets may be purchased here) which runs at Pioneer Theatre until Nov. 4.
